Between its local eats, shops, parks and quiet family-friendly neighbourhoods, Fergus is a local hidden gem!
Here are five reasons you should consider a move to Fergus.
1. Location, Location, Location!
Fergus is becoming increasingly popular for its desirable location. By living in Fergus, you are just a short drive away from Puslinch, Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, Guelph, and its surrounding areas. If you are looking for a small-town feel, where you can put down roots and establish yourself while remaining close to larger cities in the area, Fergus is the place for you!
Also, Fergus has its own infrastructure: grocery stores, a hospital, and a local fire department. Currently, Fergus is undergoing an expansion across Highway 6 that is planned to push the community further into the rural areas. The current plans are a proposed urban boundary expansion and the development of Fergus’ Business Park.
2. Natural Scenery & Outdoor Activities
Fergus has some of the most scenic parks, trails and streets! The suburban neighbourhoods are boasting nature, featuring mature treelines and beautiful backyard spaces! Even within the suburban setting, Fergus is home to large lots, providing spacious backyards and plenty of lot-frontage.
Some of the best parks and trails in Fergus include:
- Templin Gardens
- Bissell Gardens
- Gibbins Drive Park
- The Fergus Cascades
Take a short walk through Fergus and experience the river’s natural beauty. The Fergus Cascades offer breathtaking views of the water. This is the perfect place to take photos, enjoy the views as the sunset sprawls over the bridge, or continue walking and exploring the shops in Downtown Fergus!

Bonus: Fergus’ Rich Community History
Fergus is full of charm and history! It became an independent town in 1999. The first settlers were freed workers, who helped found the area “Little Falls,” which is the space near the Library and the Fergus Market. Across Fergus, you will see hints of this heritage, with plaques and various commemorations of the contributions that have made Fergus what it is today!
Fun fact: the first home in Fergus is documented to be built back in 1883, making it home to many stone homes and old brick architecture! Soon after, homes began to take shape, and so did libraries, churches, and the first schoolhouse. As traction in the community grew, a post office was established in 1836.
Another fun fact: The first curling club established in Ontario was started in Fergus back in 1834 and it is still active today!
